What is a VIN?
A vehicle identification number is the vehicle’s identifier. The lookup on this site accepts modern 17-character VINs. The letters I, O and Q are not used in that format. Older or specialist vehicles may use other formats that this service does not support.
Where to find it
Check the registration document or the VIN visible near the base of the windscreen. Depending on the vehicle, a manufacturer label may also appear on a door pillar or in the engine compartment. Compare the number on the vehicle with its documents.
A decoder and a factory report answer different questions
Characters in a VIN can identify information about the manufacturer and vehicle. A complete equipment list comes from the available factory record associated with that VIN; it is not simply encoded in those 17 characters.
Our input checks the format. That alone does not establish that a VIN is genuine, that a vehicle exists or that its factory record is available. For Norwegian vehicles, an additional register lookup may display make and model.
