VINBYCAR / FIELD NOTES

A clearer VIN photo in one minute.

Small changes that make text recognition more useful.

The VIN is short, but a reflective windscreen or a blurred label can make it difficult to read. A little preparation helps both the camera and your own final check.

Fill the frame with the number

Move close enough for the full line to be sharp. Keep all 17 characters in view, including the first and last. Avoid including unrelated personal information from a registration document when a close crop of the VIN is sufficient.

Change the angle, not the characters

Reflections can hide individual letters. Try a different angle or softer light and hold the phone steady. Never guess a character because the first photo is unclear; take another image or read the physical number directly.

Check the proposed result

VINBYCAR recognises text in your browser and asks you to confirm the number. The image stays on your device. Recognition can still be wrong, so compare every character before using it. A format check is not proof that the VIN belongs to the intended vehicle.

Keep a manual route

If the photo is difficult to read, enter the VIN from the registration document. Norwegian registration lookup is another starting point, but the identified make and model should still match the vehicle you intend to check.
