List the opening methods
Ask how the tailgate is opened and closed from the vehicle, the key and any external control. A powered tailgate does not automatically establish that every opening method is available. Check hands-free operation as a separate claim if it is advertised.
Leave room for movement
Park safely and allow adequate clearance above and behind the car. Ask the seller to demonstrate the tailgate using the vehicle's instructions. Keep children, hands and luggage away from the moving panel. Never use a person or body part to test obstacle detection.
Check your actual use
Look at the load opening, floor arrangement and access to any underfloor compartments. If you regularly carry a particular item, measure it and the available space rather than relying on a photograph. Do not load heavy objects or exceed any stated load limits as part of a viewing.
Record limits and concerns
Note whether the tailgate completes its movement, whether controls respond and whether warnings appear. Ask about unusual noises or interrupted travel without forcing the mechanism. If a height setting exists, ask how it is adjusted before changing it. Your notes should distinguish an advertised convenience feature from a demonstrated function and from the separate question of mechanical condition.
