Factory option or later addition?

How to read a mismatch without jumping to conclusions.

A car may have an attractive feature that does not appear in its factory report. That does not automatically mean the report or the seller is wrong. Equipment can be installed after production, and factory records can have gaps.

Separate origin from condition

A factory equipment entry can support a claim about original configuration. It cannot establish the present condition of that feature. Equally, an aftermarket addition may work well without being part of the original build sheet.

Ask for the installation story

For a tow bar, infotainment upgrade or other added equipment, ask when it was installed, by whom and whether relevant documentation exists. Where approval or coding is required, verify that separately. A factory report cannot certify a later installation.

Describe the car precisely

When selling, distinguish “listed in the factory record” from “installed later”. This is more informative than presenting every visible feature as a factory option. Keep receipts and installation documents with the vehicle file.

Do not turn absence into certainty

Different manufacturers provide different levels of detail. If an item is missing, compare the record with the car and seek clarification. The useful outcome is a better question, not an unsupported conclusion.
