Start with the complete number
For a vehicle using the modern 17-character VIN format, copy the entire number into a note before starting a search. Keep the first and last characters visible. Do not substitute a registration number, an engine number or a number printed on an unrelated label. If the vehicle uses a different identification format, do not add characters to make it fit.
Compare in short groups
Read the number back in small groups while looking at the original. Then check it again from the end towards the beginning. This is a checking technique, not a way to decode the car. Pay attention to repeated characters and to characters that look similar in the typeface. Remove spaces introduced by copying, but do not guess an unclear character.
Keep the number tied to the car
Compare the VIN you copied with the accessible VIN marking on the vehicle and its paperwork. A correctly formatted number does not establish that it belongs to the car in front of you. If a character remains uncertain, obtain a clearer view before using it.
Before you continue
Keep one confirmed copy and paste from it consistently. When a result appears, compare the displayed VIN character by character with that copy. Stop if the numbers differ; a plausible model name is not enough to resolve the discrepancy.
